Planting plan for exotic or sub-tropical border

This simple design uses a handful of plants with bold, striking foliage to give a lush, sub-tropical effect. There are gaps between the plants for seasonal bedding to give additional colour. A few of the plants are of borderline hardiness and would ideally need a bit of extra protection in the winter. The banana I've used, for example, is reasonably hardy except for the stem which would need to be wrapped in fleece or straw until late May. That's the downside. The upside is having an exotic patch of 'jungle' right next to the patio!
